Smooth Operator

You know how the doctor says all we need is an apple a day to keep him away? Well, at STRIVE with Janelle we like to take things to the Nth degree. An apple a day just isn’t good enough, especially since we’re recommended to eat at least 5-6 servings of fruits and veggies a day, right?

Not gonna lie, that standard can be a little tough, especially when life gets crazy. But we’re all about solutions here too, so today we’re sharing one of Janelle’s favorite ways to stay on track—a Farmers Market Smoothie!

This recipe is loaded with fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and it’s super easy to throw together in the morning for a quick, healthy and filling breakfast, or even snack. As the name may have given away, all the ingredients came from a local farmers market (yes, we have those in Las Vegas). They are a great way to support your local community while getting outside and being active! If you’re a local and want to find a Farmers Market near you we found our faves here.

Here’s what you’ll need for the Farmers Market Smoothie:

Makes about four 16oz servings
1 cup almond milk (or whichever nut milk or soy milk you prefer)
1 apple, sliced (an orange or pear are nice as well)
1 banana cut in half
1 carrot cut in half
1 cup frozen blueberries
1/4 cucumber
1 cup spinach
1 handful of dark greens (kale, romaine lettuce and Swiss chard are great choices)
1 cup broccoli
1 standard scoop of protein powder (vegan protein powder works well here)
1 cup frozen grapes
2 tablespoons agave (100% maple syrup, honey or even dates are also amazing)
1 cup water and/or 1/2 cup ice as needed

Pile the entire bounty into a high-speed blender and whip it into smoothie mode. The result is a batch of savory and sweet smoothiness we have no intention of feeding the dog.

As you may be able to tell by the amount of ingredients, this makes quite a large batch. You can cut back the amounts for a single serving, but we like to save the rest in sealable mason jars and store them in the fridge. It’s perfect to give the kids on the way to school, or have for yourself as an afternoon snack. We found the sweetness curbs any temptations that tend to creep up throughout the day, while the protein keeps us nice and full. And see, it really is easy!

Let us know what you think in the comments! We’d love to hear how you make this Farmers Market Smoothie your own.

  • Janelle, I’m going to try this recipe. Thank you for sharing your story and helping others feel like all you need to do is to take that first step.
